“Situation is Explosive,” Warns US Unofficial Envoy
An unofficial envoy from the US, Bill Richardson has warned that the situation in Korean peninsula is explosive and urged both sides to observe maximum restraint. He urged North Korea to allow South Korea to proceed with its plan to conduct live fire military drill in the island Yeonpyeong close to maritime border on which North Korea fired artillery shells killing four people a month back.
North Korea threatened to retaliate with firing if South Korea proceeds with its life fire exercises. South Korea is planning to conduct the exercise on Monday or Tuesday when weather is conducive.
Meanwhile, Russia has summoned the envoys of the US and North Korea and asked them to stop live fire exercises as it may escalate into serious tensions. China asked both sides to observe restraint without criticising any side. As the US has no diplomatic presence, it depends on unofficial envoys for such purposes.
